How Long Does New Plaster Take to Dry?
Short answer
Fresh plaster usually sets within a few hours, but drying out takes longer. A skim coat commonly takes around three to seven days to dry, while thicker backing coats or replastered walls can take two to four weeks. Plaster is dry when the colour is a consistent pale shade with no darker damp patches remaining.
Setting is not the same as drying
Setting is a chemical reaction that happens quickly and gives the plaster its hardness. Drying is the water leaving the plaster, and that depends entirely on the room, the season and the thickness applied.
What speeds it up or slows it down
The main variables are simple, and most are within your control.
- Thickness — a thin skim dries far faster than a full replaster
- Ventilation — open windows for a period each day
- Temperature — gentle background warmth helps; blasting heat does not
- Humidity and time of year
- Whether the surface behind was already damp
Do not force it
Putting a heater directly against fresh plaster or closing a room up tight can cause cracking or leave moisture trapped behind a sealed surface. Steady ventilation and normal room warmth give the best result.
