Period property plastering in SW19

The Victorian and Edwardian streets around Wimbledon and the Village have high ceilings, deep skirtings and decorative plasterwork that is often original. Skimming can be brought up neatly to cornice and roses without losing detail, but it needs planning before the first coat goes on — once plaster is on a moulding, recovering the profile is slow work.

Original lath and plaster is still widespread here. Where the laths hold and the ceiling is sound, overboarding and skimming keeps ceiling height loss to a minimum and avoids the dust of a full strip-out. Where sections have already pulled away from the laths, replacement is the sensible route.

Flats, conversions and modern surfaces

Access, parking and working cleanly in Wimbledon

Practical access matters more here than anywhere else we work. Many Wimbledon roads are permit-controlled, so we confirm parking arrangements before the start date and factor loading in rather than turning up and improvising. In blocks, we agree access times and lift or stair use with the managing agent or porter in advance.

Inside the property, floors and stairs are sheeted, dust is contained to the room in hand and waste is taken away rather than left in communal bins. In occupied flats we plan the sequence so you keep the use of at least one room throughout.

On timings, a single ceiling is usually a day, a full period room with cornice detail is two to three, and a re-plastered flat depends on the number of rooms. Fresh plaster needs four to seven days before a mist coat, and longer where new backing plaster has been used or the room is cool.
