When Can You Paint New Plaster?
Short answer
Paint new plaster once it has dried to a uniform pale colour with no darker patches — often around a week for a skim coat and longer for thicker work. The first coat should be a watered-down mist coat of matt emulsion so the porous surface can absorb it, followed by normal coats once that has dried.
Why the mist coat matters
New plaster is highly absorbent. Full-strength paint applied straight onto it dries too quickly on the surface, giving poor adhesion — it can peel away later, sometimes lifting in sheets when tape or filler is removed.
A mist coat, typically matt emulsion thinned with water, soaks in and gives following coats something to grip.
Signs it is not ready
Hold off if you can still see any of the following.
- Patchy darker areas, especially in corners and near the floor
- A cool or damp feel to the touch
- Condensation forming on the surface
Wallpaper and tiling
New plaster should be fully dry before papering or tiling, and it is usually sealed first. Rushing either can cause adhesion problems that are far more expensive to fix than waiting.
