Plastering advice
How Long Does Plaster Take to Dry Before Painting?
Short answer
A skim coat usually takes around three to seven days to dry; thicker backing coats or full re-plastering can take two to four weeks. These are guides, not a deadline. Wait until the plaster is consistently pale with no darker damp patches before painting, then apply a suitable mist coat following the paint manufacturer's instructions.
Skim coat versus full re-plastering
A thin skim over a sound wall loses moisture more quickly than a wall rebuilt with backing plaster and a finish coat. A skim commonly dries in three to seven days, while thicker work can take two to four weeks, as explained in our existing new-plaster drying guide.
Cold weather, high humidity, poor ventilation and a damp background can extend the wait. Plaster setting hard within hours does not mean it is dry enough for paint.
Signs the plaster is dry
Look for a consistent pale colour across the whole wall or ceiling. Darker patches, particularly at corners, along the bottom or in deeper repairs, mean moisture is still leaving the plaster. Do not judge the whole room by the first patch to turn pale.
If the surface looks dry but thicker backing coats may still hold moisture, ask your plasterer before decorating. A calendar date alone is not enough.
Help it dry gently
Use steady ventilation and normal background warmth. Avoid direct heaters, excessive heat or sealing the room tightly: rapid drying can cause cracking and painting too soon can trap moisture.
Mist coat advice before painting
Once fully dry, new plaster is absorbent and needs a suitable first coat. Use matt emulsion suitable for bare plaster, diluted only as the manufacturer directs, or a specified new-plaster primer. There is no single dilution ratio that suits every paint.
Allow the mist coat to dry according to the instructions before applying finish coats. Do not use PVA as a paint primer. If paint peels or moisture marks return, stop and check the background rather than covering the problem.

Frequently asked questions
Can I paint plaster after three days?
Only if it is fully dry and the paint instructions allow it. Three days may be enough for a thin skim in good conditions, but thicker work or cold rooms need longer. Check for an even pale colour without damp patches.
Does full re-plastering take longer to dry than skimming?
Yes. Thicker backing coats hold more moisture. A skim commonly takes three to seven days; full re-plastering can take two to four weeks, depending on conditions.
What should I use for a mist coat?
Use a matt emulsion suitable for bare plaster and follow the manufacturer's dilution instructions, or use the specified new-plaster primer. Wait for fully dry plaster first.

Steve was in touch straight away, gave a very reasonable quote and was good at communicating what was needed and when he would be able to do the work. Steve arrived on time on the day, did a good job and carried out the work in very good time. I would use Steve again for any similar work.
