Plaster skimming for Sutton's mix of houses
Sutton's housing changes street by street. Near the station and around Benhill the terraces are late-Victorian and Edwardian; out towards Sutton Common and Belmont there are long runs of 1930s semis; around the High Street there are converted flats and newer apartments. Skimming suits all of them, but the preparation is different each time.
On older solid walls we check for hollow areas before anything else, because a skim over blown plaster simply cracks again. On inter-war sand-and-cement walls the surface is usually firm and just needs sealing and bonding. In newer flats, skimming over plasterboard hides tape lines and dents that show up badly under modern lighting.
