The problem

The customer's hallway ceiling in Cheam was an old one that had been painted and patched many times over the years. The surface was uneven and tired, and no amount of paint would make it flat again. Rather than take it down, they asked a plasterer in Cheam about skimming it smooth so the hallway could be redecorated properly.

Preparation

As with every plastering job we carry out around Sutton and Surrey, we started by protecting the hallway — floors and doors were covered with dust sheets, and the light fittings were safely dealt with before any plaster went up.

The work carried out

We skimmed the ceiling with multi-finish plaster, trowelling it out to a smooth, flat finish. Skimming a ceiling is a straightforward way to cover cracks, Artex and old paint in one go, leaving a clean surface that is ready to decorate. Once the plaster had dried, the ceiling was painted a rich dark colour — a finish that only looks right on a genuinely flat surface.

The result

The hallway ceiling went from tired and uneven to smooth and flat, then finished in a deep, rich colour that gives the hallway real character. A good example of ceiling plastering in Surrey: a small job that makes a difference to how a home feels.
